This is an interactive live cinema performance about a cyborg who is also an Arabic-speaking mother - VJ Um Amel (Arabic for ‘Mother of Hope’, and the online persona of VJ and digital artist Laila Shereen Sakr).
The audience gets to decide how the story is told as VJ Um Amel invites the viewer to get present with our post-911 world. Um Amel, along with her robot companions, Femme Bot and Shashi, move in and out of media from 1950s Egyptian cinema to present day video games, full-length films, and the Internet in search of Um Amel’s child.
If our animated cyborg is a mother, then whom did this part human/ part artificial character give birth to? What does ‘hope’ look in the 21st century?
